What it is. The sympathetic nerves help control blood flow, sweating and temperature. In complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), these nerves may contribute to burning pain, colour and temperature changes, and swelling. Local anaesthetic is placed next to the sympathetic nerves, in the neck (stellate ganglion) for the arm or in the lower back for the leg, using X-ray or ultrasound.
Who it may help. People with CRPS or related nerve-type pain, as one part of a wider plan that includes physiotherapy, desensitisation and psychological support.
