What it is. The occipital nerves run from the top of the spine up the back of the head. Injecting local anaesthetic, sometimes with steroid, next to these and other head and neck nerves can help certain types of headache and head and neck pain. Other treatments, such as pulsed radiofrequency, may be considered when blocks help for a short time.
Who it may help. People with certain headaches, such as occipital neuralgia, some migraine and cluster headaches, or headaches arising from the neck, after assessment.
