Sacroiliac Joint Procedures

What it is. The sacroiliac (SI) joints connect the base of your spine to your pelvis. When painful, they can cause pain in the lower back, buttock or upper leg. An injection of local anaesthetic, sometimes with steroid, can be placed into or around the joint to help show whether it is the source of pain and to reduce inflammation. Radiofrequency treatment of the small nerves supplying the joint may be offered for longer relief.

Who it may help. People with pain around the lower back and buttock that is thought to come from the SI joint, after assessment and examination.
