What it is. A small amount of local anaesthetic and steroid medicine is injected, using X-ray guidance, into the space around the spinal nerves (the epidural space) or next to a particular nerve root. The aim is to calm inflammation and irritation around a nerve that may be causing pain in your back, neck, arm or leg (sometimes called sciatica).
Who it may help. People whose pain comes from an irritated or squashed nerve, for example from a disc bulge or narrowing around a nerve, when other treatments have not been enough.
