What it is. The genicular nerves carry pain signals from the knee joint. A test injection of local anaesthetic can be placed next to these nerves to see whether it eases your knee pain. If it does, radiofrequency treatment can be used to switch off those nerves for longer. This does not repair or replace the joint. It aims to reduce pain so you can move and exercise more comfortably.
Who it may help. People with ongoing knee pain, for example from arthritis or after a knee replacement, who are not suitable for surgery or who want to try other options first.
