Radiofrequency Denervation

What it is. Radiofrequency denervation uses a thin needle placed next to a small nerve that carries pain signals. A radiofrequency machine first tests the position with gentle stimulation, then delivers controlled heat or pulsed energy to reduce those pain signals. It is guided by X-ray or ultrasound and is commonly used for selected spinal, sacroiliac, knee and other joint pain.

Who it may help. People whose pain has been traced to particular small nerves, usually because test nerve blocks gave good but short-lived relief.
